I Should Have Died When You Loved Me

I should have died when you loved me
while yet you still did care.
For when you loved me I was full
and life did seem more fair.

I should have died when you loved me
before I knew the harsh fact.
Once the flame does flicker out
it won't be coming back.

I should have died when you loved me
before it all was used and spent.
Then the rigid balance would show
me perfectly happy, so content.

Oh, why didn't I die when you loved me
before I fell from your grace
and having reflections of love's sorrow
mirrored blankly on my face.

All the luster of love's pleasure
does not spoil through years of agony
but in the lessons I do find, I know,
I should have died when you loved me.

  1. Ohhhhh...a sorrowful touch
    the tears flow like rain
to know that this sadness engulfs
and brings you so much pain.....

    Hugs,

  3. Mon Spencer  . . . this has to be one of the most beautiful poems
you've written, heart rending, tender, delicate, vulnerable . . .
While I'd dearly love to write a verse in response, there is
something so intimate about this poem that I'm compelled to
resist adding another thing to it, except my extreme admiration
for this eloquence, and my awe for the depth of your heartwords.
